Summary: | An evolutionary scenario of the origin and distribution of Far Eastern redfins of the genus
Tribolodon
, based on the data of their phenotypic and biological variability and also the climatic and geological history of the Far Eastern seas, is proposed in the present review. As the analysis has shown, the original species of redfins originated from the Amur redfin,
Pseudaspius leptocephalus
, under the conditions of the Amur estuary in the second half of the Miocene. As a result of isolation of the Sea of Japan, which divided the range of the ancestral species in the late Pliocene (ca. 2.4 Myr ago),
T. hakonensis
was formed in the warmer conditions of the Sea of Japan, and the colder-water
T. brandtii
was formed in the Sea of Okhotsk. With the further cooling in the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene, the amphidromous form of
T. brandtii
in the Amur estuary gave rise to a fresher-water redfin species,
T. sachalinensis
. Landlocked populations of
T. brandtii
in rivers of northwestern Honshu Island formed
T. nakamurai
during the second half of the Pleistocene. The multiple isolations of the
T. brandtii
populations in eastern Japan due to the freezing of the Tsugaru Strait during glaciations led to the split of
T. brandtii
into two subspecies,
T. brandtii maruta
and
T. brandtii brandtii
