Melatonin as an antioxidant: The main functions and properties

Recent data on the antioxidant properties of melatonin are reviewed. The possible direct scavenging capacity of melatonin with regard to superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, peroxyl radicals, and peroxynitrite anions is discussed. Data on the regulation of antioxi...

Description
Summary:Recent data on the antioxidant properties of melatonin are reviewed. The possible direct scavenging capacity of melatonin with regard to superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, peroxyl radicals, and peroxynitrite anions is discussed. Data on the regulation of antioxidant enzymes by melatonin and the participation of hormone metabolites (AMK, AFMK, and 6-OHM) in protection against oxidative stress are presented. The effects of melatonin on mitochondria, the main source of free radicals in cells, are considered.
