Description
Summary:Elastic waves with audio or ultrasonic frequencies propagating in a crystal lattice at a finite temperature are studied from the viewpoint of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. In order to demonstrate the essential principle of the present approach, a simple system, that is, a one-dimensional anharmonic lattice is studied in detail. The dispersion relation for the wave and the relationship between random thermal motion in a crystal lattice and collective motion of an elastic wave are obtained. Singular behaviour of ultrasonic waves in a crystal near its melting point is also discussed.
