Thermally Stable Photoalignment Layer of a Novel Photo-Crosslinkable Polymethacrylate for Liquid Crystal Display
This letter describes the thermal stability of a photoalignment layer conposed of a polymethacrylate consisting of a methyl 4-(4 ′ -hexyloxy)benzoyloxy-cinnamate side group for liquid crystal (LC). The axis-selective photoreaction of the cinnamoyl group induced a negative dichroism, while the photo-...

-hexyloxy)benzoyloxy-cinnamate side group for liquid crystal (LC). The axis-selective photoreaction of the cinnamoyl group induced a negative dichroism, while the photo-Fries rearrangement caused a small positive one. The negative dichroism became positive when the film was annealed at 150°C as a result of self-organization of the side groups, and the annealing treatment at 210°C did not change its spectroscopic characteristics. The nematic LC was aligned on the exposed films in a direction parallel to the electric vector of linearly polarized (LP) UV light and the alignment layer showed thermal durability of the orientational characteristics of the LC up to 200°C. |
