Summary: | Electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-printed photoreactive spacers were applied to liquid crystal displays (LCDs) as a substitute for conventional silica bead or column spacers. We produced uniform SU-8 spacers using the jet mode of EHD printing. SU-8 was demonstrated to be a suitable substitute material with a high transparency and thermal resistance. The LC cell with the EHD-printed SU-8 spacer had a homogeneous LC orientation and a regular pretilt angle of 2.41°. A twisted nematic (TN) LC cell with the EHD-printed SU-8 spacers was fabricated and compared to conventional TN cells based on silica bead or column spacers. |
