Summary: | Walter Karplus has been involved with simulation since 1950, when he was concerned with petroleum exploration and production problems. His MS thesis (University of California, Berkeley, 1951), his work at International Geophysics, Inc., and his PhD dis sertation (University of California, Los Angeles) all involved simulation. Walter has been a member of the faculty of UCLA since 1955 and has also been a con sultant since then to many companies and government organizations. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a recipi ent of the EAI Senior Scientific Simulation Award. No one has done more to advance the state of simula tion methodology, particularly with respect to the handling of distributed systems and associated par tial differential equations than Walter. And all the while he has given outstanding support to the Simula tion Councils (now SCS) by accepting appointments to official positions, by organizing and chairing ses sions and contributing outstanding papers to techni cal meetings, and by his continuing encouragement of all of us. |
