Summary:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of academics' job satisfaction to intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as gender, age, marital status, seniority, academic status, position, area of work (science and engineering, social science), and presence or absence of academic experience abroad. Participants included 203 academics working at state universities in Ankara, Turkey, during the summer semester of 2004-2005. The results of this study show significant differences on intrinsic satisfaction. Older faculty members, those with academic experience abroad, those with greater seniority, and those with higher academic statuses had higher scores than did younger academic staff, persons with no academic experience abroad, those with lower seniority, and those with lower academic statuses. Moreover, academics in areas of science and engineering reported higher scores on the extrinsic dimension of job satisfaction than did those in social scientific fields. However, there were no differences in academics' job satisfaction according to gender and academic status.
