Summary: | Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition that can have a significant impact on a patient’s life. It can also be life-threatening, from trauma caused by seizures, as well as those patients who die from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, and in status epilepticus. Once stable, patients can generally be cared for in primary care. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the management of epilepsy and potential difficulties that may arise. This article discusses the different types of seizure, the diagnosis and management of epilepsy, and special considerations, such as prescribing in pregnancy and driving restrictions. In primary care, GPs are expected to undertake at least an annual review and this article highlights the points that need to be covered. |
