Description
Summary:Ceruloplaslnin is a multifunctional metalloprotein shown to play a role in a nulnber of physiological and pathological processes. In this study, ceruloplasmin has been identified in a restricted number of neurons in human postmortem brain tissue by immunocytochemistry. Immunoreactivity was not found in glia, oligodendrocytes, or endothelial cells. The neuroanatomical areas of the forebrain that were studied were cortex, caudate, and putarnen. The neuropil of the caudate appeared to have a higher background staining than other areas. No immunocytochemical staining was found in the white matter areas of the corpus callos~tm and internal capsule. A subset of neurons in the substantia nigra and the pontine area of the brain stem did label. Astrocytes, endothelial cells, and oligodendrocytes did not stain in these areas. Because ceruloplasmin's functions have been correlated with neurodegenerative disorders, a closer examination of the role which this protein plays in neurodegenerative diseases is recommended.
