Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to obtain demographic information on the opinions, personal preferences, and difficulties encountered when using automatic teller machine cards for direct payment purchases in Canada. A survey, administered to 195 university students, assessed demographic information related to direct payment use and included a simulated action that required a verbal response in 4 card swipe conditions. Results of the survey confirmed widespread use of the automatic teller machine card for direct payment purchases. Participants in the survey indicated few complaints about the process with the exception that many expressed difficulties in figuring out how to orient the automatic teller machine card through the machine's card swipe mechanism. Analysis of the simulated action of card swiping revealed substantial differences in the effectiveness of different icons in transmitting information about how to orient the card.
