Summary:Longitudinal transient strain waves in a semi-infinite rectangular bar are analized based on the elasticity equations. Asymptotic solutions are obtained which are valid at large distance from the impacted end. The expression of the axial strain includes the effect of warping of plane sections and completely coincides with that of a circular bar if the radius of gyration of the cross sections is the same.
