Description
Summary:This study examined the impact of employment on youth (ages 9-17) with emotional and behavioral disorders in a residential treatment center. Comparisons were made between 188 boys enrolled in the campus work program and 138 boys who had chosen not to work. Positive effects for workers were found with respect to behavior problems and reading performance. Moderate work intensity (9-13 hours worked weekly) contributed to positive behavioral outcomes, while the benefits of work duration (i.e., total weeks worked) were maximized at about 52 weeks of work. Thus, reports of detrimental work effects for nonclinical samples may not be generalizable to youth evidencing emotional and behavioral disorders.
