Description
Summary:Support groups have proven to be a major and invaluable component in the treatment of caregivers of individuals with cognitive impairment. As the success of these groups became established, efforts were made to examine for what subsets of the caregiver population they were effective. A pilot program of support groups for husbands of Alzheimer patients was conducted by the authors and the findings published in Clinical Gerontologist, 1986. The following article is a followup of that project describing a tightly knit band of individuals, who through the establishment of bonding are beginning to deal with the caregiver issues and becoming in the truest sense of the word a "self help" therapeutic edeavor, Specific recommendations are offered for the implementation of similar groups as part of a larger network of care provider services.
