Description
Summary:This paper reviews the current status and management of the tomato yellow leaf curl begomovirus (TYLCV) disease on tomatoes in Tanzania. While the primary focus of this review is on the TYLCV problem in Tanzania, measures that have been adopted elsewhere to solve the problem are also discussed to provide a comprehensive overview in line with the principle of integrated management of the disease. The use of planting materials that are resistant/tolerant to the virus, weed control/farm sanitation, chemical sprays and biological control of vectors, manipulation of sowing date to escape periods of high vector populations, mulching and intercropping are measures that have been adopted by tomato growers to reduce tomato yield losses caused by TYLCV. To achieve effective and sustainable control of the disease, combination of many strategies that can be integrated feasibly is imperative.
