Description
Summary:August explains that from 1959 until the emergence of the Obama administration after 2008, the US used a variety of tactics that included invasion, subversion, and, most important, an economic embargo aimed at terminating the Castro regime and imposing the US form of democracy on the island. For August and many Cubans loyal to the ideals of the revolution, the American goal of regime change, masked in terms of democracy, remained the same, but under Obama it became a cultural war: summer youth education programs in the United States, fashion shows in Havana that were an affront to Cuban society, and television stations, particularly CNN, that ignored positive views and interviews about Cuban life. Because of August’s assertion that the Revolution is not yet complete, critics may dismiss his glossing over of Cuba’s poor socioeconomic conditions and the frustration of Cuba’s youth at the lack of employment opportunities.
