Summary: | The organicist and romantic ideologies of 19th century Germany and Weber's pervasive critique of them are outlined. Weber's sociology of status groups is discussed in relation to the Juncker domination of the Prussian political system. Weber's analysis of Russia in 1905 extends his critique of organicism and the communism of the mir favoured by Slavophiles. Weber, it is argued, champions individualism and freedom and demands universal suffrage and democracy to replace status group privilege and the corporatist state. Failure to achieve these aims risks bringing on a new era of servitude in the modern world. |
