Summary: | Simone Routier's three volumes of poetry, published between 1928 and 1934, made a significant, though largely unacknowledged, contribution to the transition to modernity in Quebec poetry. I assess her role in developing a greater openness and complexity in speaking of passion as an emotion that involves the entire person, including the senses (the scopic engendering the tactile); in presenting the female subject as both object and agent of love; and in occasionally reversing traditional gender roles. In contrast to previous expressions of love in Quebec poetry, the experiences she conveys are set in the city, a contextual space of modernity. |
