A highly efficient, solvent-free and energy-effective method of cellulose acetylation

Acetylation of cellulose by acetic anhydride was found to be catalysed quantitatively by iodine under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. Cellulose acetates were characterised by 1H NMR spectroscopy.
