Opening of furanone ring of 2,3-dihydrofuro[3,2-c]coumarin-3-one derivatives by arylhydrazines

2-Benzyliden-2,3-dihydrofuro[3,2-c]coumarin-3-one derivatives smoothly form corresponding hydrazones upon interaction with phenylhydrazinium chloride. However, when treated with phenylhydrazine base, these compounds undergo furanone ring opening and osazone formation.
