Summary: | ON JUNE 6, 1904, approximately 100 persons met in Atlantic City and organized the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis (shortened in 1918 to National Tuberculosis Association). This year, from May 17 to 21, the Association is returning to Atlantic City for a Golden Jubilee meeting and celebration. Pediatrics is pleased to have this opportunity of paying tribute to the accomplishments of this great organization during its 50 year history.
Tuberculosis has been a tough foe of mankind for centuries. It has the dubious distinction of being the first specific disease to have a nation-wide group of men and women join together for the purpose of effecting its control and eventual eradication. In this combat between man and microbe the National Tuberculosis Association has played a leading role. Its original constitution stated its purposes to be "the study of tuberculosis in all its forms and relations; the dissemination of knowledge about the causes, treatment, and prevention and scientific treatment of tuberculosis." |
