Summary: | Concerning the discussion of the letter to the Editor in Pediatrics about the use of scalp vein needles to perform lumbar punctures on young infants: There is no doubt that the procedure is performed much more easily using a scalp vein needle for the reasons which have been outlined. The reasons for using an obturator and the spinal tap needle have been outlined also. In addition to possibly introducing infection into the central nervous system space, the possibility of introducing viable epithelial cells into this space is also a theoretical hazard. |
