The comments by Hoffman are well taken and his analysis of the data presented by Day et al1 in their article deserves consideration. In addition to Hoffman's observation on acceleration of a foreign body from a back blow it should be noted that the acceleration measurements by Day et al were done with the accelerometer on the external surface of the neck. To validate the assumption that downward acceleration of a supraglottic foreign body would result from a back blow requires acceleration measurements performed upon the foreign body itself. |
