Summary:Mature cystic teratomas account for 30–45 % of all ovarian tumours. Malignant transformation of these tumours is rare with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being the commonest histological type. During a 24-year period (1986–2010) we identified six women treated for SCC arising in a mature cystic teratoma at our institution. Each case was reviewed retrospectively recording presenting symptoms, tumour markers, preoperative imaging, tumour stage, management and outcome. Durable responses are difficult to achieve but best treatment response was seen in a woman who had partial response to chemo-radiotherapy. Concurrent chemo-radiation may be considered for disease confined to the pelvis.
