Summary:ABSTRACT A new LCD configuration is presented which consists of a grating surface treated to induce homeotropic alignment placed opposite a planar anchored surface. The cell is filled with a negative nematic LC. When a field is applied to the cell, the grating converts an electrically induced tilt torque into a twist torque. This leads to an electro optic effect with many attractive properties including wide viewing angle.
