Description
Summary:The following contribution is a personalized account of the failed attempt to convert one of Europe's largest railway stations, Frankfurt Main Station, from a terminal station into an underground through station. Written by a German transport engineer who was actively involved in proposing possible tunnel solutions at the time, the article traces developments around the Main Station all the way from the early days of Frankfurt's urban development to the current situation where key challenges still remain unresolved. The author ultimately concludes that any new concepts for expansion must now account for a future liberalization of both rail and coach travel, and properly accommodate the long-distance bus station near the station.
