Summary: | Hypersaline bottom conditions have been observed in Peard Bay, Alaska. The water appears to be renewed on an annual basis. Although it does not seem to affect permafrost degradation rates in Peard Bay, similar pools of water along the Beaufort Sea coast could greatly increase the rates of permafrost degradation. Order of magnitude estimates suggest that the hypersaline waters do not become anoxic. |
