Description
Summary:Only two species of clinid fishes are found in the Indo-Pacific outside of the South African and Australian regions. They are Clinus nematopterus Günther (1861), known only from the holotype, from the "China Sea" and Clinus xanthosoma Bleeker, widespread in the Indo-West-Pacific. Cristiceps halei Day (1888) and Cristiceps flammeus Jordan and Starks (1906) are considered to be synonyms of Clinus xanthosoma. A new genus, Springeratus, is proposed for C. xanthosoma. The new genus is differentiated from all other Indo-Pacific clinids in having palatine teeth and a peculiar disposition of fleshy flaps around the genital and anal openings.
