Summary: | The golden hamster is a nocturnal animal with the major period of activity during the interval 8:00-11:00 PM. The spontaneous activity of hamsters is altered following infection with Trichinella. During the reinvasion of the intestinal mucosa by the adult worms (days 5-7 p.i.) activity is reduced. There follows a two-week period of normal to slightly above normal activity. Between the 4th and 9th weeks activitity is sharply curtailed. In an animal which died of the infection, activity was subnormal throughout the course of the disease. |
