Dwarf Sumac as Winter Bird Food
Birds consistently chose fruits of dwarf sumac (Rhus. copallina) rather than of smooth sumac (R. glabra) when both were available as wrater food. Dwarf sumac had larger fruits and higher caloric value than smooth sumac.
