Effects of abscisic acid and ammonium ion on morphogenesis of cultured barley embryos

Summary: | Excised, immature embryos of barley, Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Moore, were cultured upon nutrient agar media containing abscisic acid (ABA) and ammonium ion (NH4
+) in several combinations and concentrations. NH4
+was growth promoting in the range 2.1 to 8.6 mM. ABA, in combination with NH4
+, inhibited coleoptile and scutellum elongation but promoted differentiation of the scutellum and had a normalizing effect on overall morphology. Embryos, wounded by a longitudinal cut through the shoot apex, underwent a partial regeneration in vitro. This was more pronounced when embryos were cultured upon media containing ABA. |
