Summary: | Examining the fiction of three major writers of the French Enlightenment (Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Diderot), this essay considers how these writers confront the traveling Philosophe with his prejudice of universalization, his fanaticism of the self, and his cultural narcissism. My analysis will show that a more progressive aspect of the Enlightenment can be demonstrated. |
