Oral infections with Toxoplasma cysts and oocysts in felines, other mammals, and in birds

Summary: | Toxoplasma oocysts were shed by 1 out of 7 bobcats (Lynx rufus), 1 mountain lion (Felis concolor), and 2 Asian leopard cats (Felis bengalensis) after the ingestion of toxoplasma cysts. Oocysts were not shed by 16 nonfeline mammals from 7 orders nor by 9 birds from 5 orders. Toxoplasma oocysts derived from house cats were infectious to 9 species of mammals from 6 orders, and to 4 species of birds from 4 orders. The seroconversion of 7 laboratory workers, closely related to their working with feces of infected cats, is circumstantially attributed to oocysts. Seven others who worked in the laboratory for a total of 75 months and did not handle infectious oocysts did not become infected. Puerto Rican land snails which ingested cat feces with oocysts shed them in their feces for 2 days. Toxoplasma could be reisolated from 14 species of mammals and birds which had developed antibody, and from chickens (Gallus domesticus), Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix), bluejays (Cyanocitta cristata), and crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) although they did not develop appreciable levels of antibody detected by the dye test. Toxoplasma could not be isolated from 9 seropositive opossums (Didelphis virginiana). |
