Summary: | Chinese hamster cells (DON-C pseudodiploid strain) were exposed to multiple flashes of $2.3\ {\rm mJ}/{\rm cm}^{2}$ from a frequency-quadrupled neodymium laser operating at 2650 Å. This cell type showed a marked decrease in cell number within 48 hours after treatment, but subsequent growth rates were found to be equivalent to that of control cell populations. Other effects of UV-laser treatment included a decrease in the mitotic index and an increase in the number of cells showing nuclear abnormalities. In addition, laser energy at 2650 Å produced all known types of chromosomes and chromatid aberrations. The effect produced by this UV-energy source appeared to be quantitatively less, but qualitatively similar to cellular effects produced by conventional UV sources. |
