Description
Summary:The possibility of stress with associated increases in adrenocortical activity contributing to lymphocyte depletion by extracorporeal irradiation of blood (ECIB) or thoracic duct lymph (ECIL) was studied in adrenalectomized, sham-adrenalectomized, and unoperated calves. No pronounced differences in response, as measured by decreased blood lymphocyte counts, decreased thoracic duct cellular output, and loss of lymphocytes from peripheral lymphoid tissues, were observed among the three groups of animals. The conclusion is drawn that under the conditions used, stress did not play a major role in lymphocyte depletion induced by ECIB or ECIL.
