Electron Spin Resonance of X-Irradiated Nucleic Acid Base Pairs, 1-Methyl Cytosine:5-Fluorouracil at 300 K

Three free radicals have been detected in single crystals of a molecular complex between 1-methylcytosine (1MeC) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) X-irradiated and observed by ESR at 77 K. One of these (Radical I), formed by H abstraction from N(1) of 5FU, disappears when the crystal is warmed to 220 K. The...

Description
Summary:Three free radicals have been detected in single crystals of a molecular complex between 1-methylcytosine (1MeC) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) X-irradiated and observed by ESR at 77 K. One of these (Radical I), formed by H abstraction from N(1) of 5FU, disappears when the crystal is warmed to 220 K. The other two radicals are stable at room temperature. Radical II is formed by H addition to C(6) of 5FU. Radical III has been tentatively assigned to a radical formed by H addition to the oxygen on C(4) of 5 FU. The structural analysis of these two stable room-temperature radicals and the resulting implication that free radical damage may be transferred from 1MeC to 5FU are discussed.
