Summary: | Following the popular success of the Istanbul Art Biennial, begun in 1987, in 2012 the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts convened the First Istanbul Design Biennial. The curators, Emre Aralot, a renowned Turkish architect, and Joseph Grima, the editor in chief of Domus, offered divergent interpretations on the exhibition's organizing theme of "imperfection." Arolat's Muibet, meaning "menace" or "trouble," convened in Istanbul Modern, while Grima's Adhocracy was held in Galata Rum Elementary School, a former school turned cultural centre. An open call for submissions reaped a wide variety of work in architecture, industrial design, fashion, graphic design and interactive media by over 200 designers and architects from forty-six different countries.
