Summary: | Society does not love commerce and merchants, whom it roundly regards as speculators. Emotions are numerous, and they splash forth from all manner of tribunes-both higher and lower. The word-symbols "speculator," "cooperator," "middleman," and "dealer" inflame audiences and evoke applause and acute resolutions. But what is behind the symbols? What is their content? It is extremely difficult to obtain an intelligent answer. We therefore deem it necessary calmly to analyze intermediary, commercial activity and its role in the formation and action of the market mechanism as a special form of the relationship between production and consumption through trade and buying and selling. |
