Aetiology of Infective Endocarditis

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening disease of the heart which, before the discovery of penicillin, was nearly always fatal. Although the use of antibiotics and, more recently, cardiac surgery have greatly improved survival, mortality remains high at 30 per cent.11
