Description
Summary:Grain yields and components of yield were determined for 12 varieties planted approximately 2 weeks apart beginning May 10 in 1951 and May 8 in 1953. Date of seeding had an effect on the number of bolls per plant and on the number of seeds per boll produced. Variety differences for yield were significant only in the drier season of 1953. Number of seeds per boll was most closely related to yield in both years. It was also significantly correlated with yield in the second and third seedings. Except for a negative relationship between number of bolls and number of seeds per boll on the first and third seeding, the yield components were mutually independent. Long season varieties suffered more than short season varieties from delayed seeding in reduced yield and reduced number of seeds per boll. However, even in short season varieties the decline was appreciable.
