Summary:Within the last 20 years historical changes have strong influence on global events. Environmental threats, changes in the global power structure, the fight for resources, the American dissociation from the United Nations and terrorism are challenges to the world community. These problems, in addition to continuation of the European process of integration and the positioning of Germany within the EU, pose difficulties for the German foreign and security policy. Germany can protect its security interests by a return to a »healthy patriotism« and a deliberate and self-confident relationship with the concept of power. This could enable Germany to make an important contribution to global security.
