Description
Summary:It is evident that there is a lack of agreement about heuristics or the heuristic method. Kulm deplores the lack of a clear or consistent meaning of heuristic but does not attempt a definition or working description. This lack of definition appears to limit the validity of his criticisms of the two articles. It was also precisely this lack of definition that led us to describe clearly the strategies for solving word problems that were used in our study. In this way we provided an operational definition for those who wish to construe this study as a heuri stic one. It is debatable, however, if all problem–solving research should be characterized as the teaching of heuristics.
