Summary:A numerical approach based on the finite-element method is described for the analysis of the discontinuities in an elastic plate waveguide for Lamb waves. The validity of the method is confirmed by comparing the numerical results for the edge resonance phenomenon in a semi-infinite plate with the results of the variational method. Since the present approach is applicable to the frequency range in which the waveguide propagates multimodes, the Rayleigh wave scattering at a step discontinuity is investigated by adequately enlarging the value of the plate thickness.
