Description
Summary:CuAlSe 2 crystals were grown by two methods. The one is melt growth by the Bridgman method and the other is chemical vapor transport using iodine as a transport agent. The basic characteristics of the grown crystals were examined. Lattice constants of a and c axes were exactly determined as 5.595 and 10.932 Ă…, respectively. In photoluminescence (PL) spectra at 4.2 K, an intense blue peak at 2.639 eV in near band-edge region and a weak orange band at 2.0 eV were observed for melt grown crystals, but only the orange band was found for vapor grown crystals. It was known that the blue emission is due to the radiative recombination of donor-acceptor pairs. The color of the crystals grown from the melt changes from yellow to black after exposing them to air for 1 week and this might be due to the oxidation of active (maybe unreacted) Cu and Al on the surface by forming CuO and Al 2 O 3 . Similar color change was not observed for vapor-grown crystals.
