Summary:In the following article, I present a study about the acquisition and learning of noun modifiers (adjectives, prepositional phrases, determiners) in the written discourse of American students who are learning Spanish as a foreign language, and Spanish children who are acquiring Spanish as their first language. For this study, I have applied the syntactic maturity indexes developed by Hunt (1970) for the English language in the seventies, and adapted by Veliz (1999) for the Spanish language. Keywords: syntactic maturity, noun modifiers, unit-t, acquisition, learning. En el presente trabajo presento un estudio sobre la adquisicion y aprendizaje de los modificadores nominales (adjetivos calificativos, frases preposicionales, determinantes posesivos) en el discurso escrito de ninos cuya lengua materna es el espanol y de estudiantes estadounidenses de espanol como segunda lengua. Para el estudio hemos aplicado el concepto de madurez sintactica desarrollado por Hunt (1970) para el ingles y adaptado por Veliz (1999) para el espanol.
