Summary:Introduction: To carry out comparative analysis of the education program in diabetes mellitus in Mexico and Cuba. Materials and Methods: In this work we used a comparative research methodology through the Case Study, the technique used was documentary analysis; it was defined two categories: Institutional context of education program in diabetes mellitus and the teaching methodology of the program. Results: Program design diabetes education is similar in both countries; however, while the health system of Mexico is composed of three segments: Social security institutions, institutions for people without social security and private institutions; Cuba has a single social security system. Regarding teaching methodology and thematic content of the program education in diabetes, both countries have defined a team of health care providers, but Cuba, also included a podiatric and patients, who have experience and proper control of their diabetes; with respect to thematic content, in Mexico the program is a basic course on the knowledge of diabetes mellitus; in Cuba, in addition to the basic information it includes essential treatment aspects such as problem solving, that can generate changes in self-care and avoid harmful patterns of daily behavior. Discussion and Conclusions: Program design diabetes education in Mexico and Cuba is similar, differences were identified both in the institutional context in teaching methodology. It is a priority to evaluate the results of this health program to identify strengths and weaknesses and to implement the changes required in this health policy. Materiales y Métodos: En este trabajo se utilizó una metodología de investigación comparativa, a través del Estudio de Casos; la técnica utilizada fue un análisis documental; se definieron dos categorías con criterios específicos: Contexto institucional del programa de educación en diabetes mellitus y la metodología de enseñanza del programa. Resultados: El diseño del programa de educación en diabetes mellitus de ambos países es similar; sin embargo, mientras el sistema de seguridad social de México está conformado por tres segmentos: instituciones de seguridad social, instituciones para personas sin seguridad social e instituciones privadas; Cuba tiene un sistema único de seguridad social.
