Summary: | This article aims at analyzing cassava root commercialization in the State of Sao Paulo (Brazil) from its main production regions: Assis and Tupa. The results might contribute to improve productive and commercial efficiency as well as uncertainty reduction allowing for cassava chain long term development. In order to reach such objective, some variables as productive systems characteristics, transaction characteristics, agents' characteristics and governance structures adopted were analyzed, by using a qualitative and descriptive method. The authors also used a non-probabilistic sample selection. In this case, a field research was conducted with 28 and 31 farmers from Tupa and Assis regions, during the 2011-2012 period. The theoretical basis which guided the analysis was agricultural commercialization as well as the Transaction Costs Economics. Main results indicate that for both regions the production systems are market guided with a minor family based production system. Transaction frequency is high with low level of opportunism within farmers and buyers. Uncertainty is considered low and information sharing regarding production and demand is present, mainly for Tupa region. Bounded rationality was considered low when market and production information were used for decision making. The governance structures adopted, informal contracts in most cases, seem to be suitable for promoting coordination and reducing transaction costs because of the high level of trust built along time among the agents. |
