Description
Summary:Sedentary behaviors are responsible for much of the premature morbidity and mortality from chronic conditions. Young people are prone to sedentary behaviors in both study and leisure activities, so assessment and monitoring is important to reduce these behaviors; however, validated low-cost tools are not available. The objective of this study was to validate, in terms of both content and construct, the questionnaire the Sedentary Behaviour questionnaire in a population of university students. The study included 274 university students from different areas of knowledge to whom the Spanish version of the Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire was applied in person. Construct validity and content validity were analyzed. The questionnaire showed good performance except for the items on playing a musical instrument and handicraft making. The instrument had four terms that were linguistically adjusted; in content validity, all items obtained an rWG index above .5, except for the sitting time playing an instrument item. In construct validity, two dimensions were determined: Leisure and free time, and academic and daily activities, which matched well by s-stress. University activities were the one that involved the most sedentary behaviors (12-15%). The use of the Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire is recommended for the measurement of sedentary behaviors in university students and to complement it with objective measures of activities according to context and culture.
