Summary: | The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that firefighters have a value of maximum oxygen uptake (VȮ2max) of at least 42 ml/kg/min. Therefore, the aim of this study is to use the 2400m running test to estimate VȮ2max in Military Firefighters. Fifty four Military Firefighters from the State of Santa Catarina participated in the study. Participants completed the 2400m running test as quickly as possible in one day. The VȮ2max was estimated using an equation based on performance in the 2400m test. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to verify the association among variables, adopting a significance level of 5%. The estimated VȮ2max was 47.6 ± 4.2 ml/kg/min. The time to perform the test was 658.7 ± 72.4 seconds, with an average speed of 13.3 ± 1.3. The estimated values of VȮ2max of Military Firefighters in the present study are in accordance with the recommended levels for this population. Therefore, the 2400m test is capable of indicating those at high risk of cardiac complications, based on the minimum requirement for efficient and safe performance in firefighter activities, especially firefighting. |
