Here we describe , a new species, in . sect. , sympatric and morphologically cryptic with the edible and medicinally cultivated mushroom, . Phylogenetic analyses showed that is closely related to , and that is a new synonym of . Despite being morphologically cryptic, can be distinguished from by several ITS and species-specific markers and a 4-bp insertion in the sequence. Furthermore, is a cosmopolitan species, while distribution is so far restricted to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and the United States.
