Description
Summary:Food supplements are products that help consumers adapt to their diet, given their varied nutritional composition. Several supplements have been widely prescribed by professionals aiming at physical appearance, performance and also prevention of nutritional deficiencies and recovery of individuals in risk groups. The aim of this study was to quantify the total protein content of Whey Protein samples available on the market, comparing them with values declared by manufacturers and with Brazilian legislation. The total protein contents of thirty samples of food supplements with Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC), acquired through online commerce, were analyzed by the indirect Kjedahl method. All analyzes were carried out in triplicate. The results showed that 66.67% of them had lower protein values compared to the descriptions on their respective labels. However, considering the 20% plus and minus fluctuation that is allowed by RDC nº18/2003, only 13.34% of these samples are in non-conformity, according to Brazilian legislation, although they do not represent the real values reported on the labels of products, which are made available to consumers. Whey Protein is one of the most consumed food supplements today, whether by athletes to improve physical performance, or to recover nutritional status in individuals with various disorders, the description on the package is the main source of nutritional information about the product. In this way, the regulation of the real values of the composition of supplements is essential to meet the nutritional needs of different consumers who purchase them for different purposes. I risul
